What Is the Best Way to Clean Wood Furniture?

You don’t need special cleaning solutions or a lot of time to keep solid-wood furniture looking beautiful. Just wipe it with a damp cloth. If you feel using soap is necessary, go with a mild, non-abrasive kind, such as Dawn. Then dry the piece with a clean, soft cloth.

Remember to clean all parts of your furniture, including legs, arms, and even wooden supports.

Clean spills immediately

Besides cleaning furniture, you must protect it. Here are some of Adirondack Furniture’s tips for maintaining wood furniture.

  • Wipe away spills immediately. Standing liquid can damage wood furniture.
  • Avoid placing hot, wet, or messy dishes directly on a tabletop or other surface.
  • Don’t use vinyl or plastic placemats or tablecloths; they may contain damaging silicone.
  • Don’t slide rough or abrasive items across a table without something underneath them.
  • Don’t use silicone- or wax-based products to clean wood furniture.
  • Keep furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Keep your home’s humidity level between 35 and 45 percent so the wood won’t swell, crack, or warp. Wood is a natural fiber that shrinks and swells with the seasons. Controlling the humidity in your house minimizes this.

Polishing your furniture

There is no need to polish your new furniture–it has a high-quality, catalyzed-varnish finish that gives it a natural, smooth luster.

If you do feel the need to polish wood furniture, wait until it’s been in your home for at least six months so it can fully cure. Then use a non-silicone, wax-free polish that won’t build up and make your furniture look dull, cloudy, or dark. What is the best polish for wood furniture? We recommend using Guardsman.
