How to Style a Living Room with a Sectional Couch: Part 2

[Continued from Part 1]

Use a Chaise Lounge for Multi-Purpose Sectional Design

Chaise lounges are a very popular sectional feature. A chaise lounge ends a sectional in a wide, flat cushioned section that is somewhere between a bed and an ottoman. It is for lounging, napping, and often acts as the mail and handbag offload point. A well-styled sectional chaise lounge, however, can become a statement piece in an elegant living room. Chaise lounges can be decorated with throw blankets and pillows in a way that invites people to sit, lean, and chat or causes the dimensions of your living room to stand out more elegantly.

U-Shaped Sectional Opposite the Television

May families gather opposite the television for their weekly shows and general nightly entertainment. Line all the chairs facing one direction and the TV will be the only thing watched. However, a u-shaped sectional that brings the conversation circle around on itself quite comfortably can spark conversation even in the most absorbing home theater.

U-shaped sectionals often have welcoming end-pieces that make it easier for family members to join in and sit down. Don’t block a U-shaped sectional with a bulky coffee table. Instead, opt for  tray stands to provide surfaces for drinks, plates, and remotes.

Unify a Multi-Door Living Room with Sectional Pieces

Some living rooms cannot easily hold an entire L or U shaped sectional because there are too many doors. This is actually a perfect room for sectionals and sofa sets. Sectional pieces can be used to unify a room, letting doors interrupt the couch sections, but not the total style.

You can easily style a living room with sectionals by outlining the doorways with interrupted sections and placing matching chairs on the opposite side. Breaking up your sectional also gives you the chance to experiment with end pieces throughout the room, instead of just two ends of a traditional L or U shaped design.

Define a Walking Path Behind Your Sectional

Sectionals are often placed against walls, but they don’t have to be. You can also create an  accessible walking path behind your sectional, and use the sectional couch to define the conversation ring of your living room. Sectional couches are often considered more stylish when pulled away from the walls either to define a space in open-plan (turning their corner to the open room) or by floating in a larger room with walkable pathway between the sectional and walls.

In accessible homes, the right sectional pulled away from the wall can create a DIY handrail when  walking through the living room. If your living room has an abundance of doors, placing the path behind the couch backs removes the necessity of breaking up the sections.
