How to Style a Living Room with a Sectional Couch: Part 1

How do you style a living room with a sectional couch?

Sectional couches are great because they can wrap around into cozy corner seating or break apart to fit the shape and flow of any seating space. We call them sectionals because each couch design can be built and rebuilt in sections to suit the needs of each room. There are corner pieces, middle pieces, and end pieces. There are chaise lounge sections, armchair sections, loveseat sections, and recliner sections.

Some sectionals are squared-off and minimalist, some are hand-carved and traditional. Some come with matching ottomans. Some pair perfectly with an area rug. Styling a sectional couch can be a fun project, and an opportunity to try your living room in several arrangements. Let’s explore a few ways to style a living room with sectional couch sets.

Define a Space with a Sectional and Area Rug

Sectionals often look beautiful when paired with an area rug. How do you style a sectional and rug? One option is to choose a rug close to the same length and width as the sectional, and together create a complete rectangle and room-within-a-room definition of the space.

This works wonderfully in defining the family room in an open-plan home. But you can also mix up your sectional and rug alignment and size proportions. You can have an oversized rug, or an offset rug where the sectional is on top of some of the rug, and the rug defines your family room’s floor-friendly space.

Create a Conversation Circle with Matching Sectional and Chairs

Sectionals make great conversation circles, and can help promote conversation between those gathered in your living room. One of the best ways to style your sectionals in the family room is to pair them with matching chairs.

This gives you a chance to create an elegant and unified room that also has heavier and lighter, shared, and solo seating. Look for sofa sets that include couches, love seats, chairs, and sectionals to build your matching living room with seating of exactly the right sizes and shapes.

Ottomans and Coffee Tables with Sectionals

Sectionals often look excellent paired with the right size ottoman or coffee table. This is because these added elements complete the rectangle and help define the space. In fact, even a round ottoman can help style a living room with a sectional if it properly defines the space – and can be reached for kicking up feet from every direction.

Coffee tables can also play an important role. Many different styles of coffee tables can help to balance a space within the rectangle defined by the sectional and/or the area rug below the sectional.

Deep Sectional Turns the Den Into a Napping Zone

One of the best ways to use a sectional is a place for napping and snuggling. A deep, comfortable sectional can make a quiet space into the perfect nap zone. Add a few light blankets and particularly comfortable throw pillows to your sectionals decor, and any tired family member who happens to flop on the couch in your den, living room, or family room will find themselves pleasantly engulfed into sleep.

Many families and homes need a good napping couch, and sectionals make the best kind. If you need a full-sized recliner to ease your aching bones and catch a relaxing nap, you can build one into a sectional. If you need long, flat expanses of cushion to share for snuggling with a partner or pets, you can  have it with a sectional.
